1st Grade--Reading Menus

First grade friends reading menus!! I showed them the menus and their eyes grew wide and said, "We can't read those!" I told them to look for words or symbols they knew and to mark them with post-it notes. The top photo shows two symbols...an apple and a pepper. One of the first graders wrote underneath the apple "nutritious" because apples are good for you, and "spicy" because peppers are spicy. Then noticed the symbols throughout the menu. I would say that is one kind of reading at its finest! They left that day saying, "I can read a menu"
