Here is a list of 10 ways to enhance family literacy:

Read, read, read!

Read magazines, books, newspapers, menus, signs around town, digital print.

Ask your child about what their reading.

Ask questions before your child starts reading, during, and after. Don't forget to ask them to PROVE IT, and support their thinking with evidence from the text.

Incorporate writing.

Reading and writing go hand-in-hand, so write notes, e-mails, texts, or letters to each other each day.

Sing songs together.

Whether you sing a song together on the radio or make up a song of your own, it is a great way to work on expression and attitude for reading.

Cook together.

Teach your child how to follow a recipe and look at the proportions of measurement. Great math and reading skill practice.

Tell Jokes.

When the family is together being silly and telling jokes, memories are being made. These memories create connections while reading.

Board Games & Word Games.

Family game night creates good problem solving skills along with reading strategy practice.

Family Notes.

Make family to-do lists, grocery lists, make a calendar and write down goals or wishes for the year each of you have.

Library.

Visit the library and bookstores together. There are always fun events for adults and children to attend together.

Projects.

Create or build something together such as a piece of art, a garden, a puppet show, etc.
